2nd Annual Dad/Dominic End of Summer Trip
Last year Dominic and I went to the Iowa State Fair the weekend before he began 2nd grade. I thought it might be fun to start a tradition of going on a trip with Dominic the last weekend before each of his summer vacations end. With that in mind, we planned a fishing trip for last week, and then headed up to Iowa for the remainder of the weekend. We both had a great time!
Wednesday, August 13
I snuck out of work about an hour early so that we could get a head start on our trip to Osage Beach, where we had a room booked at the Econo Lodge. It was a smooth trip, both of us excited about being out of Kansas City and on a mini-vacation. We arrived at Osage Beach around 8:30, checked into our motel and grabbed a bite to eat at Arby's. Dominic even swam a little bit at the outdoor pool at the hotel, although he didn't enjoy being in the pool by himself at night, even though I was right there next to the pool.
Thursday, August 14
The big fishing day! I hired a guide to take us out on a boat for four hours. We got to the marina at around 6:45 AM, and we were on the water until about 11:15 AM. Dominic caught anywhere between 15-20 fish, mostly perch, but a few bass also. I didn't catch squat, which Dominic enjoyed reminding me of the rest of the weekend. He had a blast, which made it all worth it. Our guide, John, was super-cool, and we enjoyed talking with him as much as fishing. He even took us up to 70 mph in his boat--awesome! We will definitely go fishing with a guide again when the opportunity presents itself. We took a picture of almost every fish that Dominic caught, so I will try to post some once we get them developed and scanned. We left Osage Beach around noon to drive to Iowa, and we arrived at grandma and pappap's house at about 4:00 PM. Not a bad trip--pretty easy drive, even though I was tired. We saw Reegyn and Lynae Thursday night, had some Casey's pizza, Dominic shot his BB gun and we generally just hung around being lazy.
Friday, August 15
Grandma and Pappap had to work, so we slept in a little bit. Dominic was up early, but he watched cartoons while I slept on the couch. We ate some donuts and other junk food. Grandma got home around 1:00 PM. We did some research for our fishing trip to northeast Iowa in October, trying to find an available cabin. Friday night we went to Fun City in Burlington, eatin at Arby's (again!) along the way. Dominic had a great time at Fun City, playing the games in which you win tickets that can be exchanged for prizes. He hit the jackpot on one game, and had close to 1000 tickets before we finished. Not bad for $50. We also watched an X-treme movie--one of those that makes you feel like you are on a roller coaster. It was a 3D movie called Aqua Ride (or, something like that.)
Saturday, August 16
Pappap made some breakfast (Mmmm, scrambled eggs and ham--made me think I need to cook breakfast more often!) Dominic, Pappap and I went to Green Acres in Donnellson to swim. They have a nice pool, with a diving board. Lynae and Mark are lucky to live right next to the golf course. And, soon, grandma and pappap will live there also, making it really easy to go swim and golf whenever we want. Cool! After swimming, we went out to the landfill to fish a little bit, but didn't stay long because the grass hadn't been mowed back, and the bugs were driving us crazy. I did catch a few good-sized bluegill though. We went back to the house where Dad grilled some awesome pork chops, and then we went to Mark's parents to pick up Reegyn (Lynae and Mark were at the Iowa State Fair over the weekend.) Then, we went back out to Green Acres, where Dominic got to drive the golf cart and I golfed a few holes with Dad. I hit one really nice drive, but was messing up in my short game (as usual.) We came home and watched the Spiderwick Chronicles, and a little bit of Olympic swimming.
Sunday, August 17
Dominic finally slept in, and didn't get out of bed until about noon. I mostly visited with mom & dad during the morning, and played around a little bit with Reegyn. Dominic and I had a smooth trip back to Kansas City, where Sharon was making a nice ham dinner. We had dinner with Sharon's mom & dad & brother, and then played around the yard a little bit.
All in all, a great weekend. Now, I need to think of something to do next year for the "last hurrah of summer vacation."
